As we’ll eventually cover in the side notes comic (update coming soon!), Dr. Horace Buckhurst is based on Dr. Orville Ward Owen, who built an actual “cipher machine” to decrypt hidden messages in Shakespeare’s work. Amelia Marlowe’s look is loosely based on Hedy Lamarr. The Cogs Museum is an invention, but I bet it would have interesting things in its collection: clockwork sonnet writers and pendulum powered prediction machines, at the very least.
