Latest Comics

Eighteen Eighty one

Edit: thanks to Reddit user garlic_lollipop who pointed out that the comic was missing the last panel! It's fixed now.

New Secret Knots comic: "1881".  If you know someone who you think would like it, you can easily share it with the button to post on Mastodon, Bsky, Facebook, etc. That's how people get here most of the time.

This comic was brought to you thanks to the support of kind Patreon subscribers, such as Phil Gooch.

I'd love to have a palindrome that made sense to add here in the text, but I think I've had enough of flipping things for a while; there will be a full dossier post about this comic, with extras and references, on Patreon soon, though.

Wait! Here's one: ailihphilia ;)

The Secret Notes: New Comic – Boarding School P.1

These are the first two pages of a new medium-length story called Boarding School, and it’s one of the things I’ve working on, during this silent time.

I hope it looks intriguing! The files for this one currently have a “v4” somewhere in their names, because it took me four times to restart the comic until I found a style that convinced me in line with the story. I think it goes a bit in the tone of my long comic Unspeakable, although this one is only 8 pages long. There’s a lot to share about the world of the school in the dome in the form of a special dossier, so i’m thinking about doing one midway.

There will be a new portrait call related to this project as well. I’ll share the details on the next update.

I’m very excited about this comic in particular and glad to be finally sharing some of it with you. Thank you very much for your support and for accompanying me on this ride.

A gallery of you

These are all the “Orgone portraits” I made, drawings of some of you in the mood of the latest Secret Knots comic.

It was a fun marathon and good exercise! I think it helps me draw faster and looser and I want to believe that at least in some cases I’m getting better at the likeness game, which was something that I only considered incidentally at first, and turned out to be harder that I expected. (It still is I’m afraid)

Thanks for playing! There will be another chance at this later. I’ll be drawing fictional people now for my next story, a day in the life of a boarding school…that’s located in the fringes of space and time.

It’s not THAT weird, I promise.

Comic Dossier – Saint Jules

This is the special dossier for the new Secret Knots comic Saint Jules.

Read the comic here in mobile

and here’s a the Patreon exclusive PDF version in comic book layout, better suited for stationary

1. Inspiration

This is a story where I wanted to play with elements I was missing out from the comics toolbox due to the compressed form of most of my tales, so it was built around dialogue, gestures, silence, a different length and rhythm and the lack of an omniscient narrator. I made many changes to the script, because it seemed to lean at every turn to a more symbolic route, while I initially intended it to be a rather candid scene. I’m aware it ended up being an open ended capsule but I think I like it that way. There is an intended play in the way the festivity of Saint Jules is mirroring an act of letting go the past, just like Julie is on vacations in the aftermath of a marriage gone wrong, but I like metaphors to be present in a fleeting, non-mathematical way, just like fantastic elements in the books of Haruki Murakami seem to point to a very clear, readable meaning one moment and the next they are just puzzling apparitions, possibly inspired by his many topical fixations.

I think it’s not surprising that I enjoy drawing old buildings and weird demons.

This was the first drawing I made when I didn’t know there was a story behind it

I enjoyed working with these two characters

Rumors and theories about the story world that I wouldn’t disprove

  • The sacrifice of the dark flyers has been celebrated in Saint Jules since 1614. Three times the demons have failed to appear, marked by tragic years for the town: a flood, a septicemic plague and the temporary shutdown of the boarding school due to a brief outbreak of mysterious fainting episodes, all happened during this fated years.

  • The dark flyers always appear in numbers of two to four. Only in 1896 the locals spotted a single creature floating among the streets, and the rumor states that the unseen companions lived long lives in disguise among humans, one as a tailor, one as a brothel regent. The tailor shop and the brothel are now popular spots in the tours and the current Saint Jules representative in the parliament is said to be a direct descendant from the infamous tailor that lived for many years.

  • According to the legend, Saint Jules a priest that kept a secret record of all the confessions made to him in an illustrated manuscript. His body was found brutalized and covered in markings, and several witnesses declared having seen flying, cackling creatures escaping the priest’s cell that night, one of them carrying the condemnatory book and feasting on its pages. Although most these citizens were known for their licentious lives, among them was the abbot, who ratified their stories and added vivid details to the devilish attack.

They say the ironic depiction of the Saint making a gesture of silence is of late origin.

  • The children figures used to trick and feed the flyers started to be made from papier-mâché in the 20th century. In centuries XVII and XVIII they were made of wood, but there’s no agreement among historians how the first fake kids were made and the intriguing representation in paintings of the original decoys screaming and crying doesn’t help to clarify the facts.

  • The Stamps Vineyard is a vineyard where the leaves show a strange marking resembling a crying Virgin Mary, which was originally used to label the wine bottles. Locals in Saint Jules sometimes use the expression “making the virgin cry” when referring to heavy drinking.

  • The Dentists Museum collects the tools of a small guild of former blacksmiths who became full time dentists during the XVIII century. None of them had any other medical knowledge and under the guidance of an exiled Italian alchemist, they developed a full array of exotic instruments. These days, Saint Jules has a health system that fully covers dental procedures and their orthodontists claim no relation whatsoever with their predecessors, known in songs and horror stories passed through generations as the Cabal of the Smiles.

New Comic – Early Access – PDF version

Here’s a Patreon exclusive goodie: the new Secret Knots comic, ‘Saint Jules’ in full page layout. I’m attaching a 9 pages PDF with this story. (Look for the attachment link please, it’s the first time I do this so I don’t know how evident it is)

If you are on mobile and prefer to wait for the scrolling version, I’m working on it and will send a notification like this one about it too. Keep in mind, though, that the traditional comic page layout is the format I had in mind when I made this comic. I intended to post it in episodes first, but I wasn’t satisfied with how it read in installments, specially since it is a single long scene.

What’s next?: I will post the mobile version and along with it, the comic dossier with some sources of inspiration, sketches and concepts and the ‘head canon’ section with further insights into this little story world.

There’s a new drawing treat coming up too.

I hope you enjoy this comic! Please grab a cup of your favorite beverage and let me show you a few sights of this very touristic small town.

New Comic “Saint Jules” – part 1 – Patreon exclusive

Hi! I’m glad to be back and share the first pages of this comic with you as I advance through it. I’m working with some challenges and changes here that have to do with the direction I’m taking my drawing to, but also the kind of pacing I wanted to exercise. I hope it looks intringuing!

As per the lenght of this story, this is 3 pages out of 8.  I’m already moving forward on it, working on page 5 as I type this, so we can expect an update soon. Some of it it’s in process, as I tend to change things in the text in the final stage, but I thought it could be interesting to show you those changes as they happen. Once it’s finished, I’ll have a PDF version with the original full-page layout available for you and a special dossier too, just like I did last time.

Does it look interesting?

Thanks for your support!
