Geometry of Faces

Hello! In this edition, the werewolves moon keeps on shining, and the Lydia Ray comic moves forward in different formats.

New comic progress

I started to share a webtoonized version of the comic on Tumblr, that’s behind the actual progress I’m sharing on Patreon, but looks good on mobile.

For this story, I worked the layout of the comic as a traditional comic book page initially, but luckily this story has proven to be easily transferable to the scrolling reading. Both versions will arrive to a definitive destination, because the webtoon one will be featured on the Secret Knots website, while the comic book version will be added to a Lydia Ray digital magazine with the 3 stories. I’m at the final stages of the comic, inking the last two pages, but there’s still a brief overall revision left, where I intend to work the consistency of elements like fonts and tones. I’ll adjust some face drawings as well, since, only at the end of the process, I felt like I was getting the handle of the character’s geometry.

Too different!

Werewolf season

The transformations continue, with these Patreon portraits that have been much fun to do. I started sharing them with the reference picture, to try and find the likeness behind all the fur, specially for the full werewolf form. In all, I think this is also good exercise for me, regarding eyes and expression. I imagine it’s the kind of exercises you need to master with anthropomorphic animals cartoons.

Sketchbook

Here’s another batch of sketchbook improvised people. Again, I did this while playing rpgs on Discord. It’s not that I was bored or distracted, but playing through voice or video chat it’s tempting for me to start fiddling with things I have on my desk: I often end up anxiously flexing my plastic figurines into impossible poses. Drawing helps me focus further on the game, I’ve found, and sometimes I end up sketching some of the characters we meet in the adventures, or my own.

This is all for this edition of the newsletter, special thanks for the replies and comments on the Pilot Edition, that helped me make sure these loose notes are getting through to you.
As we learned to say, so formally, during this pandemic, “I hope this email finds you well”.

Have a great week, everyone.
Juan.
