Eighteen Eighty one

Edit: thanks to Reddit user garlic_lollipop who pointed out that the comic was missing the last panel! It's fixed now.

New Secret Knots comic: "1881".  If you know someone who you think would like it, you can easily share it with the button to post on Mastodon, Bsky, Facebook, etc. That's how people get here most of the time.

This comic was brought to you thanks to the support of kind Patreon subscribers, such as Phil Gooch.

I'd love to have a palindrome that made sense to add here in the text, but I think I've had enough of flipping things for a while; there will be a full dossier post about this comic, with extras and references, on Patreon soon, though.

Wait! Here's one: ailihphilia ;)

“In the Mirror” New Secret Knots comic (finished)

Hello! I’m glad to be sharing the new Secret Knots comic, a story that took much more time than I had guessed initially. There are several things I’d like to share about the process of this one, specially regarding the sketches and fake art in it, but I’ll leave that for the upcoming dossier.

In order to finish the comic, I had to put on hold the Patreon Wizard Portraits for a little while. Now that it’s done, I’ll resume the delivery of that reward. Making the wizards has been a lot of fun, so I look forward to drawing the pending ones. If you updated your pledge over the past cycle in order to get extra customizations, feel free to adjust it back; your drawing is on the list and be delivered soon. I’ll share a special post with the resulting parade of sorcerers once they are all out.

Thanks again for your patience, these stories are made possible by your kind support and feedback. I stared at individual parts of this story for so long that I lost the necessary perspective to see if it’s a fun read as a whole, so I’ll be reading any notes or comments with special interest.

I hope you have a great week!

Sketchbook: a couple of reels

I’ve been experimenting with reels on Instagram.

or, if you prefer, Tumblr link:

https://santapau.tumblr.com/post/685416107403886593/ive-been-playing-zweih%C3%A4nder-rpg-and-my-character

– That one is a drawing I made from a situation in the rpg I was playing, a game called Zweihänder. Zweihänder is a gritty, low fantasy tabletop rpg, I get the feeling it’s like the HBO version of Dungeons & Dragons. There are fantasy races as well, but violent conflict isn’t necessarily epic and stories tend towards tragedy or dark outcomes. I was invited to be part of an actual play (in Spanish) that got uploaded to YouTube, although the recording of the first session failed, so session 01 is audio only. In the story, my character was forced to betray one of his loyal servants in order to live, hence the dramatic music.

Regardless of the somber setting and game, we had a lot of laughs, as it happens when you play in a comfortable and friendly group.

– The other recent reel I made was a quick experiment with a correction pen.

This one got had a considerable amount of views -compared to others I’ve shared-, probably the music helped, as it seem to happen with reels.

New Patreon portraits treat: Fantasy Wizards

Hello there. It’s time for a new illustrated costume party here on The Secret Knots Patreon, or, in other words, a round of thematic portraits. And now it’s the turn of magicians, sorcerers and witches.

As some previous portrait games, and being the rpg fan that I am, I’ve narrowed down the inspiration sources to a few CHARACTER CLASSES:

1. Classic fantasy wizard: (Merlin, Morgan le Fey, Tolkien’s Istari, 70’s D&D art)

2. Magic School Teacher Wizard

3. Modern dark witches and sorcerers (Charmed, Buffy, Chilling Tales of Sabrina)

Fairy Tale witches and warlocks (Grimm brothers’ stories, Disney, Oz Witches)

I’m listing these as a general reference or aesthetic inspiration, but keep in mind that Earthquake Critic patrons are offered special customizations to their portraits, and those may include being drawn as some specific character from the sources above, or somewhere else.

My idea is to make the portraits black and white, with a symbol in the background. The symbol might be one that you choose, a mystical looking design, a single letter from your name, or any other arcane looking icon. If you don’t have anything in mind, I can improvise something.

***

This game is open to Patreon tiers 3+.

As usual, feel free to edit your pledge just for this month if you want in.

For the Earthquake Critic tier, there are customizations available, such as:

A ‘familiar’, meaning, an animal companion that’s bound to your magic abilities. A cat, a dog, a snake or a raven, but it can also be a mythic creature (small): a homunculus, a tiny gargoyle, an imp, a little ghost.

A human companion, who may also be a wizard / witch. Some ideas: they can be at your side, looking at you from a crystal orb, trapped in a mirror, or in a background portrait. (Your old mentor? The predecessor you stole your powers from?) In this case, there is no symbol, or it may be in your robes or in a book.

A different mage type, not specified in the 4 basic classes, a specific fiction character, or one that you design yourself.

***

To ask for your portrait, please email with the subject Wizards, including a photo reference (or remind me of a picture you’ve sent before) and your chosen Character Class. Email address is gemeloperverso@gmail.com.

Please keep in mind, I may use some portraits in a social media post to promote my Patreon. Feel free to let me know if you want to opt out of that, it’s ok.

Leave comments or questions below if you want, and thanks!

Comic in progress: Memory Weaver

This story of a story continues after this.

There are a couple of more pages with the final scenes, but we’ll leave it here for now, while I make some changes and work the inks of the final sequence, in future Earth.

The lovely insect with drone-like wings is a robot. I’ll tell you all about it in a different post with the sketches…
